The Eugenia Spa

The Eugenia Spa has brought together two of my Sukhumvit favourites: one of the coolest boutique hotels in partnership with one of the most popular spas in Bangkok, and the combination is impressive. At the back of this quirky colonial hotel on Sukhumvit Soi 31, looking out over the jade tiled pool, the spa is managed by So Thai Spa, providing the same high standard of treatments and products used in the other branches in Bangkok, Phuket and London. The staff really know their stuff, and you get 5 star quality without the hefty price tag. The hotel isn’t too hard to find, but a good 20 minute walk from the BTS at Phrom Pong, so we recommend taking a taxi. Eugenia Spa is open from 10:00 until 22:00 every day.

Walking through the hotel’s lobby and out through the French windows, you will find one of the Eugenia’s gems: a stunning green tinted swimming pool with a small Thai inspired wooden terrace. The spa is through the ornately carved wooden doors to your left, with the private treatment rooms up a vintage staircase. The spa is very much in keeping with the hotel itself as most of the fittings and fixtures are vintage finds from around Asia, right down to the light switches. The spacious spa suites have high ceilings and shuttered windows, and the en-suite bathrooms complete the step back in time with faded retro tiling and even an aluminium tub on the top floor.

It would be easy to spend an entire afternoon at the spa with so many options available. You can enjoy a single treatment, select one of Eugenia’s packages or mix and match to suit your needs. The staff speak good English and are happy to explain in further detail if you have any questions. If you are short on time then you can opt for a foot massage for 30 minutes (400 baht) but the packages can last up to four hours and include a foot massage, gold gel body scrub, aroma massage and cleansing facial (3500 baht). I opt for the three hour Siam Package (2,800 baht), and get allocated the double suite on the top floor, complete with matching armchairs and massage beds. It’s a welcoming space, with Thai inspired touches such as patterned fabrics, and ornate wall hangings.

The Siam Package starts with a quick foot scrub and then you get to lie down and relax. The foot massage incorporates elements of reflexology, where a wooden stick is pressed against certain pressure points on your foot, as well as a lower leg massage. A tropical smelling salt scrub is used for your next treatment, and after an hour of vigorous rubbing your skin feels cleansed and refreshed. After a quick shower to wash off the scrub you can enjoy a tea refreshment, before settling down to the oil massage, which includes elements of Thai massage. One of my favourite things about Eugenia Spa is that after you have finished your treatment you can enjoy afternoon tea or a drink in the exquisite lounge that overlooks the swimming pool or lounge outside, rather than rushing straight back into busy Bangkok. This day spa on Sukhumvit has a perfect setting and great value treatments making it a great spot for a half day of pampering.
